Chennai formerly known as Madras is the 4th largest metro city in India and the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is divided into 4 parts – North,central, South & West. North Chennai is primarily an industrial area. Central Chennai is the commercial heart of the city. South & West Chennai, previously mostlyresidential, are now becoming commercial with upcoming firms & call centres. The city is fast expanding in the south & in the west.

It is the gateway of South India. Chennai is the Musical & Cultural capital of India. The city is known for its classical dance shows & Hindu temples.

It is a major trade center, being well linked by road, rail and air to important cities besides being a sea port. Compared to the other major metros of India, it is far less congested and polluted.

Kapaleeswar Temple – It is located at Mylapore in Chennai. The presiding deity is Lord Kapaleeswar (Lord Siva). Gopuram, Mandapam and tank are interesting points to see.

Kalashetra

Kalashetra – An important cultural centre for Bharathanattiyam is Kalakshetra, on the beach in the south of the city It was founded by Ms.Rukmani Devi Arundale in 1936. It is a renowned training centre for the classical dances & music of India. It is also called as 'Temple of Arts'. It is located 10 Km from Chennai.

The attractions are Noctnimal house, Safari Park, a walk through aviary, the pre-historic Animal Park, Zoo education and interpretation and Aquarium.

Fairs & Festivals in Chennai

The Brahmotsavam (including the Arubathimoovar - 63 saints festival) of Kapaleeswar temple located in Mylapore is celebrated in the Tamil month of Panguni (March-April) and it lasts for ten days. A big fair is held near the temple. The float festival held in January - February in Mylapore is also very popular.

Of all the festivals celebrated in the Parthasarathy temple in Triplicane, the most important is the Vaikunta Ekadasi observed (December-January)

In the month of December, there is a great musical (Karnatic music and dance) festival
