History of the City

It is at the Southern most tip of the Indian Peninsula where the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal meet and hence the confluence is called Thiriveni Sangamam. It is also known by its former name Cape Comorin. This is the only place in India where the Sunset and Moonrise can be viewed simultaneously on a full moon day.

Kumari Amman Temple

This temple is dedicated to virgin Goddess Parvathi & is located on the shore. The Diamond nose-ring of this deity is famous for its sparkling splendor, which is supposed to be visible even from the sea.

Dress code:Strict dress code is being followed in this temple. Gents are not supposed to cover their upper body & women are to wear either Sari or Chudidhar (fully covered dress) only.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial

This is another place in Kanyakumari that attracts large number of people. It is a grand memorial to the great Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda. It is just 200 meters away from the shore. There is a meditation hall; Ferry services are available to reach the memorial. According to legend, it was on this rock that Goddess Kanyakumari did Tapas.

Gandhi Memorial

Here a pot contains the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi. On Gandhiji' s birthday (2nd October), the Sun' s rays fall on the place where his ashes are kept, truly a testimony to modern architecture.

Thiruvalluvar Statue

Thiruvalluvar is the immortal poet of Tamilnadu. He has given the world the so called poem Thirukkural. The 133 feet high (including the pedestal) signifying the 133 chapters of the Thirukkura

Sunrise & Sun set

Sunrise can be seen in Kanyakumari throughout the year at Bay of Bengal. Sunset can be seen from view tower through out the year except the months of June, July and August.

Suchindram Temple

It is 12 Km away from Kanyakumari. It is dedicated to Lord Thanumalaya swamy. The word Thanu means Siva, Mal means Vishnu and Ayan means Brahma, i.e., Siva, Vishnu & Brahma in one form.
