In both Malayalam and Tamil, the word ‘Munnar’ means three rivers, as it is merging place of three mountain streams. The Duke of Wellington was the first prominent person to visit Munnar. Munnar is the confluence of 3 mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Due to the great weather and natural beauty, Munnar is a favorite mountain resort of domestic and foreign tourists. Despite the tourist influx, Munnar is still a quiet haven. Set at an altitude of 6000 ft, Munnar was the favored summer resort of colonial British officers.
Munnar is one of the most popular hill stations in India. Along the quite drives of Munnar, through the unending sea of tea plantations, signs of human life itself are a rare sight apart from similarly attired plantation workers. The unending dominance of the tea plantations and the mountain flower Neelakkurinji that bloom once in 12 years are both synonymous landmarks of Munnar. Playing mists, soul searching winds, hurling waterfalls, cold monsoons, picturesque towns, fragrant cardamom bushes, sprawling tea plantations, shaven silver oaks, indomitable elephant herds, long winding lanes, the bluish tint of the Neelakkurinji mountains, floating tunes of early morning radio, strangely uniform herds of plantation workers. With the mist covering in the valleys around, the plateau of a resorts sticking out, it is a heavenly feeling of being on the legendary flaying machine - Pushpak, floating over the clouds. Anamudi, the highest South Indian peek is close to Munnar. Anamudi towers over 2695m. You may consider trekking the exciting trek routes of Anamudi.
Sightseeing Places In And Around Munnar
Mattupetti Mattupetti is 13 kms from Munnar.Itis known for its dairy farm. Over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. In addition, Mattupetti has a beautiful rose garden. Visitors are allowed between 0900 to 1100 hrs and 1400-1530hrs. The Mattupetti dam is close to the farm. Boating facilities are available in this beautiful dam. Speed launch, slow speed boat and motor boats are available for hire. In the month of January and February the farm is closed as it the cattle breeding season
Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam is one of Kerala’s finest wildlife reserves, and its excellent location, a mere 16 km from Munnar, makes it
an unforgettable experience for any lover of the outdoors. The park, a spread of 97 km across Rajamala Hills, is a combination of grassland and shola forests. This place is the natural habitat ofNilgiri Tahr (mountain goats), Nilgiri Langur, sambar etc. The Park is around 95 square kilometers. You will find the park irresistibly beautiful. The park is closed in the month of February as it is the breeding season of Nilgiri Thar.
Echo Point It is 15 kms from Munnar.On the way to top station, at a spot on the lake embankment, amid some hills, every loud sound is echoed manifold by the surrounding hills— the spot is called Echo point which also offers panoramic views. It is an excellent place, especially for young travelers to disembark for a while, yell out and we can listen our own voice coming back.
Tea Museum This museum highlights some very interesting facts and figures about the growth and development of tea plantations in Munnar. An important landmark of Munnar, the tea museum houses old photographs, machinery, curios and other artifacts that have been used since ancient times. The entrance charge will be 50Rs per person. Devikulam This beautiful hill station is located at a distance of 7 kilometers and is known for its beautiful lawns and rare flora and fauna. There is a lake known as Sita Devi Lake, which is a popular picnic spot.
Attukal
Located at a distance of about 9 kilometers from Munnar, Attukal provides beautiful scenery of stunning waterfalls and lush green hills. Attukal is usually visited for trekking excursions.
Chithirapuram Chithirapuram is located at a distance of 10 kilometers from Munnar and has a world of its own. Chithirapuram still exudes an old world charm with its old styled bungalows, cottages and tennis courts. It is famous for its tea gardens and Pallyvasal Hydel Power Project.
Pothamedu Pothamedu is situated at a distance of 6 kilometers from Munnar. This lush green area is famous for its cardamom, tea and coffee plantations. The zigzag mountainous roads make an excellent place for long walks in the lap of nature.
Idukki Dam It is 55 kms from Munnar.The Idukki Dam is built on the Periyar River, in the ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in the southern partof Kerala. This is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. 550 ft. high and 650 ft. wide, the dam lies close to the Cheruthoni barrage. How To Reach There Munnar does not have an airport or railway station of its own. The nearest airport and railway station to Munnar is at Kochi, which is 130 km west of Munnar. Munnar is accessible by road from most of the towns in Kerala. Munnar can also be reached from Madurai (6 hours) and Coimbatore (6 hours), which are located in the state of Tamil Nadu..
