The only cosmopolitan non-metro city in the state of Karnataka, situated at 352 kms west of the state's capital Bangaluru, named after the Goddess Managaladevi, the city situated at the confluence of Netravati and Gurupura rivers is Mangalore officially called as Mangaluru. The city is believed to exist from 715 CE. The city has been under the rule of several dynasties namely, Kadambas, Alupas, Vijayanagara Empires, Keladi Nayaks and Portuguese. Finally under the British Rule in 1799, the city was annexed with the Madras Province and it remained the same until 1947. Post-independence, the city was attached to Karnataka.

Mangalore is the biggest city and administrative capital of the Dakshina Kannada District. The economy of the city mainly depends on port-related activities and agriculture. Mangalore New Port is the eighth largest port in India handling 75% of the country's coffee exports. Also, Mangalore is an important educational hub and IT hub.

The culture of Mangalore is a blend of all religions. Major festivals like Diwali, Christmas, Eid and Krishna Jayanthi are celebrated with equal pomp and grandeur. Several forms of arts have been in existence dating back to few centuries. Yaksha gana, Pilivesha are the popular forms of dances performed throughout night during festival times.

Prominent Places to Visit:

Panambur Beach A serene and popular beach near the New Mangalore Port is Panambur beach. During April, Kite Festival is conducted here that adds saturation to the whole scene. Dolphin Viewing is a favorite activity and has been recognized as one of the cleanest beaches in India.

Sultan Bathery Tipu Sultan’s watchtower stands ruined yet impeccably beautiful. Once it was kept as a lookout for checking trespasser into Gurpur River. Like a miniature fortress, made out of black stone, this monumental site attracts travelers who come for historical lessons.

New Mangalore port The seventh largest port in the country. Indira Gandhi had inaugurated this port during her term as the prime minister of India on May 4, 1974. It lies on Panambur, the west coast of India. Primary commodities are imported and exported from this port. Some noteworthy exports - pellets, cashew, coffee, granite stones, and manganese.

St. Aloysius Chapel A Catholic Church on the Lighthouse Hill has an imposing structure. The wall paintings are the primary attractions here. The life events of St Aloysius Gonzaga and Jesus Christ have been made into paintings. Antonio Moscheni’s paintings depict Jesus serving in Rome during the breakout of Plague. Lifesize angels, baptism, and crucifixion of Jesus Christ are all paintings to see in this well-maintained Chapel.

Best Time To Visit:

From September to April, Mangalore has the best atmosphere to explore culture-oriented places and new additions. During Summer, humidity is high and so exploring beaches can be done during the winter and early summer. From July to August, there is high rainfall. Thus, winter and post-monsoon season is the best time to visit Mangalore.

 By Air -  Mangalore International Airport (IXE) is the nearest airport. Flights connect with all the major cities of India.

 By Rail -  Trains running from Mangalore gets deep down the South of India connecting most of the cities there. The airport is just a 20 minutes drive from the railway station.

 By Road -  Buses of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and private buses operate at a competitive rate. Mangalore is easily connected to Goa, Mysore, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
