Maha Shivaratri

As the name suggests this festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva, there is a belief that if we lie wide awake and meditate towards Lord Shiva on this day it will be equal to spending 1000 years in penance towards the Lord. There will be music, dance and fun on this day’s night. Mostly this fete is celebrated during February or March

What’s so special?

This festival is solely dedicated to lord Shiva “the Ultimate God”. In Tamilnadu there is a custom that, during Maha Shivarathiri, everyone should visit their native temple and spend the whole night there by chanting the mantras of God. Especially people read hymns and songs dedicated to Lord Shiva such as Thiruchitrambala, Shiva Purana and lot more. It is a common believe among the people that if they spend the Maha shivarathiri by singing the songs of Lord Shiva all their past sins will be purified and they will be blessed by the God eternally.

On Maha Shivaratri, all Shiva temples are flocked by devotees. Pious devotees will fast throughout the day and night. On this day, they perform rurdrabhishek, Anna abishek, Vibhuthi abishek and lot more to the Shiva Lingam. Leaves of Bael tree are also offered. The devotees chant the mantra \\\"Om Namah Shivaya\\\" during the Abishekam.
