Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple: Situated in Gavipura, Kempegowda Nagar, Bengaluru, also known as Gavipuram Cave Temple, is one of the most famous temples of Bangalore. It is known for its rock – cut architecture. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple was constructed in the 6th century. In 16th century, it was restored and extended by the founder of Bangalore, Kempegowda. The granite pillars at the forecourt are the main attractions of the temple. The two pillars are said to be symbolically representing the Sun and the Moon. This cave temple’s inner sanctum which has been carved out of rock gives it a unique touch. It has been structured in such a way that it allows direct sunlight into the shrine. This happens every year in a particular month, on a particular day. On this day, the Sun’s rays magically reach the inner sanctorum of the temple. The statue of Nandi is first lighted with the rays and then touches the feet of the Shivalingam. At last, it illuminates the entire Shivalingam. Only on this day, the day of festival Makar Sankranti, is celebrated.
