What’s so special?

Have you ever seen a vehicle of God given prime importance than the deity itself, this rare phenomenon happens at the Bull temple in Basavanagudi. You will wonder whoever carved the monolith Bull, impeccably and flawlessly. 

Mythology:

India is a land filled with mythology and folktales. The mythology of this Bull temple, says that, eons ago a ferocious bull roved in the fields of Basavanagudi and ruined all the crops. The farmers were greatly annoyed due to this bull’s wayward behavior, so all the farmers took their problem to the owner of the Bull, lord Siva. After hearing all their woes Siva suggested them to build a temple in reverence to the Bull, ergo a massive boulder was carved into a vivid Bull and a temple was raised in praise of this bull. Yet another specialty is that, a metallic plate was embedded on the head of the Bull to prevent it from growing further. 

Peculiarity:

This is a rarest temple, where Lord’s mount precedes its master. Other than Bull there are the idols of God Surya and Goddess Chandra, it is also believed that river vrishabhavathi originates at the footsteps of Lord Surya. This temple is filled will fun and joy around the clock. 

Uniqueness:

Basavanagudi farmer show their gratitude to Nandhi ‘The Bull’ by contributing their first harvest of groundnuts to the Bull, this is celebrated every year in a great manner, and in known as Kadalekai Parishe' (groundnut fair). People from all over India gather here on this fete. The architecture of this temple is purely Dravidian, and the 15 feet tall Bull statue is one of the largest one carved from a single granite boulder.

Besides the bull temple, is the mysterious Ganesha temple, where the idol is made up of 110 kg of Butter, the wonder is that this butter never melts. All the devotees are left bewildered after witnessing the butter Ganapathy. Every four years this butter is distributed to all devotees and a new one is made.

The groundnut festival that occurs in Nov or Dec is very famous, other than that, Maha shivaratri and Pradosham are some of the important festivals.

This temple is near Bangalore; you can take local busses from Bangalore bus station and can reach this temple.

Bangalore International Airport gives access to all national and international planes; from there you can hire a taxi to reach this temple.
