Makar Sankaranthi and Ratha Saptami Festival- Maharashtra

Makar Sankaranthi, celebrated nationwide to mark the beginning of spring season is equally popular in Maharashtra. The festival is called in different across different regions of the country and is commonly known by the name “Harvest Festival”.

This is synonymous to a thanksgiving event when the farmers thank Sun God and the nature which have been vital in their agrarian life. They pray to Sun God for a good yield in the ensuing season as well. Makar Sankaranthi is celebrated for three days across Maharashtra. First day of the festival is called Bogi symbolizing the concept of welcoming new challenges in life and eliminating older ones.

Second day is Makar Sankaranthi, when special poojas and rituals are offered to Sun God. Third day of the festival is called Kinkrant / Kinkranti. This day is very special, when families meet and exchange delicious dishes, mainly halwa, utensils, cloths and other things. Kinkranti symbolizes rejuvenation of the bonding between friends and families.

Ratha Sapthami festival deserves a special mention in the tradition and culture of Maharashtra. Worshipping Sun God in a religious way is the highlight of Ratha Saptami. Hindu Mythology refers Ratha Sapthami as the seventh day of Uttarayana, scientifically, the sun has started travelling to the North.

Ratha Sapthami also signifies a considerable increase in temperature. This day is also referred to commemorate the birth of Surya to the sage Kashyapa and his wife Aditi, as per Hindu Puranas. The religious rituals on the day of Ratha Sapthami commences with a purification bath with the leaves of crown flowers on head and chanting mantras glorifying Sun God. This is followed by elaborate poojas and rituals with fruits, flowers and cooked rice offered to Sun God.
