Mahabalipuram, also referred to as Mamallapuram, is situated in the Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu, India. The town rests at a modest elevation of 12 meters (approximately 39 feet). Historically recognized as a port city during the 7th century, it was eminent part of the Pallava dynasty, located about 60 km south of Chennai.

The name 'Mahabalipuram' is thought to originate from the Pallava king named Mamalla. This area is distinguished by its historic monuments, predominantly constructed between the 7th and 9th centuries. Notably, it has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spanning four weeks, this festival features various dance styles from across India, performed outdoors against the majestic backdrop of the temple.
