Bhavai Artforms of Gujarat
A dance drama, reflecting the socio-economical challenges in the society and the life of contemporary people staged in a more satirical way is Bhavai, the word has its roots from Sanskrit Bhava, the emotions. An art filled with emotions, tying the onlookers with their seats, drenching them with sequences of events, of course, referred from Society.
Bhavai does not generally include women and male artistes perform the female roles as well, a unique feature about the dance drama. The performance is hosted throughout night in open grounds, mostly without any stage equipment.
Historians record that Bhavai has taken this form originally from the roots of Rajasthan and made suitable alterations to fit to the tradition and culture of Gujarat. This is generally performed during an occasion or festival, that too at a grand scale.
Dolak, Saranghi, Harmonium and other traditional musical instruments accompany the artistes dressed up in Gujarati traditional attires, which is very vibrant and colorful. The mesmerizing beats arising from musical instruments blend with the vigorous movements of the artistes, giving out an awesome performance.
