Ajanta and Ellora Caves

Visit the big and impressive complex of Ellora and Ajanta Caves which can be accessed from Aurangabad. The rock cut caves carved from rocks in the middle of nowhere is indeed astonishing. The cave temples, paintings on walls and ceilings,decorated entrances, columns with artworks make both the places highly touristic.

Travel by a cab or public transport to both the places, where Ajanta caves are fairly at a more distance from Aurangabad. The stunning beauty of the paintings all over speak about Buddhism, a major religion followed by millions across the world even today.

The paintings dating back to the period between 2nd Century AD and 6th Century AD, still retains charm, an unanswered mystery. The natural dyes and colors used from plants are the untouched beauties transforming the entire caves quite beautiful. It will take a hectic seven hours journey both ways to visit Ajanta caves, still, exploring the pieces of arts is a pleasant trip.

Ellora is at a distance of 35 km from Aurangabad. Here you find the rock cut caves with temples dedicated to Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. A significant take away from Ellora is that people of ancient times had lived together in peace and harmony despite the religious barriers.

Out of all the cave temples, Kailasha temple is the most astounding and magnificent one. One can know about the longevity of the culture and traditions looking at the figurines of Gods and Goddesses and especially the statue of Bull facing the God. In fact, the immense size of Kailasha temple is twice the area of Parthenon in Athens and taller by 1.5 times. Watching the life sized statues, especially the elephants is a breath taking experience.

Exploring Ajanta and Ellora caves is indeed a blissful experience. Don’t miss it !

Information :

  1. You can hire a cab to shuttle between two caves, which will require a 3 hour’s drive one way.
  2. Better to have hats and water bottles handy as you may need to walk for few hours to explore the caves fully.
  3. Refreshments are available at the entrance of the caves.
  4. Wear comfortable sandals and cotton outfits
  5. Have a torch as the lightings inside the caves may not be sufficient at times.
  6. If time permits, visit information centers at both places, where you can know more with AV shows. The centers also have amphitheatres, shops and restaurants.
  7. Ellora caves are closed on Wednesdays and Ajanta on Mondays. So, plan accordingly.
