Shaniwar Wada

The remnants of history about the Great Maratha Rulers and Peshwas is still more vibrant in Shaniwar Wada, the grand palace of yesteryears in Pune, Maharashtra. Built during 17th century, the palace was the Peshwas’s seat and a power center during Maratha Empire.

Enter into the exhaustive palace through the intricately designed Delhi Gate, with bastions to attack enemies and huge hall atop. The palace has a haunting story connected to it. Narayan Rao, the young boy in the seat of Peshwa was killed by his own uncle at the age of 17, the fight for power seen throughout the world.

Until the palace was captured by British Raj, it was under the control of Sawai Madhawrao.The huge Shaniwar Wada comprises of most important buildings namely Palace of Peshwa, Diwankhana, Dance Hall, Mirror Mahal, Ganesh Mahal and a beautiful Garden. The wada was seven storied one where the floors were wooden except ground first. There was a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh inside Ganesh Mahal.

In 1828, the palace was on fires which is said to have lasted for seven days. Though majority of the palace were ruined adding spookiness to the palace, it still retains its charm and relics of history.

  2. You may have to walk inside the palace to explore all the parts of the palace. So wear comfortable cloths and sandals.

  5. It is punishable by law to litter inside the fort.
