Ponmudi literally means "Golden Crown" in the Malayalam language. It is believed that Saint Parasurama, a famous Indian mythological figure founded this scenic place. Ponmudi Hills is perched at a height of 3,200 feet above the level of the sea.  The journey to Ponmudi itself is an adventure with 22 winding hairpin curves. These winding roads are just perfect for long leisurely walks.

One can enjoy a spectacular view of the lush green tea plantations and the natural springs whose crystal clear waters come gushing down from lush green valleys while you trek to this hill station. A number of adventure options are provided here like trekking, rock climbing, mountaineering, spotting wildlife and many more which can allure a decent number of tourists every year. Paragliding is another interesting adventure activity offered here.

This hill station offers the perfect vantage point for paragliding activities which is comparatively safer than other peak points in the Western Ghats region. For trekking activities, the hilly terrains of Ponmudi are just perfect. One can also discover the pleasure of nature trekking at this hill station. The climate of this region is perfect throughout the year, so one can enjoy trekking at any time at the Ponmudi Hill Station. But it is recommended not to trek during the monsoon season.

Ponmudi offers the opportunity to interact with its wildlife inhabitants during your trekking trail. The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary near the Ponmudi Hill Station houses a variety of flora and fauna. This Sanctuary is dedicated exclusively for cute little deer. The trek to the Meenmutty and Kallar Waterfalls is truly a pleasant walk through the lush green valleys and narrow winding jungle pathways. Another prime attraction here is the Agasthyakoodam Peak which is the tallest peak in the Western Ghats.

If you love discovering the mysteries of the wilderness, a trek to the Agasthyakoodam Peak is a must. But one should take prior permission from the Forest Department. December to March is the best time to visit the Ponmudi Hill Station.

  • The 2000 feet high Agasthyakoodam Peak is the major attraction of the Ponmudi Hill Station. One can access this peak only with the prior permission of the Forest Department.
  • Meenmutty Waterfalls is another attraction here.
  • A small yet picturesque viewpoint called the Golden Valley which is adorned by lush green trees and round pebbles also attracts the tourists. And the Kallar river can be accessed through this viewpoint.
  • The Neyyar Dam, Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, the Crocodile Protection Centre are also the attractions here.
