Chakkiar Koothu - Artform of Kerala
An art form of monologue and hand gestures expressing significant events from Ramayana, Mahabharatha and other Puranas is Chakkiar Koothu, a popular art in Kerala. The entire performance is carried out by a single artiste, especially the art is owned and performed by people from Chakkiar community, so is called as Chakkiar Koothu.
The artiste appear on stage accompanied by the musical instrument Mizhavu at the background. Rice powder , turmeric powder and black powder are major components used for facial make-up of the artistes and it is peculiar to see that the artistes come to stage with an ornament adorning one year and a betel leaf in the other.
The highlight of Chakkiar Koothu is the satirical tone maintained throughout the show with an innate criticism on burning social issues. In olden days, this art was keenly noticed by the Government for any criticisms or comments on the King or his actions.
