Mohiniyattam - Artform of Kerala

mohiniattam A solo dance performance, usually done by female dancers is Mohiniyattam , the iconic art form of Kerala. Mohiniyattam is recognized to be one of the oldest surviving dance forms of India. Natya Sastra, the text about Indian classical dance forms, refers to Mohiniyattam as Kaisiki Vritti (graceful dance).

The solo expressive dance performance added with song and music constitutes Mohiniyattam, which glorifies the enchantress Mohini, one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. This relates to the event when Lord Vishnu in the form of a beautiful woman Mohini distracted the demon Basmasura while the other Gods shared elixir of immortality obtained by churning celestial ocean (parkadal). Mohiniyattam retains this myth as its core.

The feeling of Lasya, as per the terminologies of dancing, Mohiniyattam is done with delicate footsteps, subtle expressions and undulating movements, depicting erotic emotions (sringara), the divine love shown to Lord Vishnu.

Mohiniyattam is performed as a solo one with Mridangam and Violin accompanying the songs composed in Manipravala Style, that is, a mix of Tamil and Sanskrit.
