Padayani - Artform of Kerala

padayani Badrakali temples of South Kerala are better known for the ritualistic dance form called Padayani. Historic and Mythological references connect this dance to the dances performed by Lord Shiva and other Gods and Goddesses with a purpose of appeasing Goddess Durga, who was ferocious even after killing the demon Darika.

Temples situated on the banks of River Pampa are the epicentres of this Padayani dance celebrations. Though in olden days, Padayani festival lasted for nearly two weeks, now it is celebrated in single day due to many reasons.

Kolam Thullal is the major portion of Padayani celebrations. Dancers who are participating in Kolam Thullal are from the group of people who take vigorous mental and physical training and follow strict ritual procedures. Padayani dancers wear head gears and face masks bearing images of various Gods and Goddesses drawn with natural colors on Arecanut Palm leaves.

Ganapathi Kolam, Yakshi Kolam, Gandharvan Kolam, Pakshi Kolam, Maruthaa Kolam are some of the types worn by the dancers. Thappu, Chenda and Kaimani are the major instruments accompanying the Padayani dancers. More importantly, the dancers go through a uniquely designed diet regimen for cleansing their body and mind which marks the preparation phase prior to the actual Padayani event.
