Literally, the word Poovar means the "Stream of Flowers". This name was given to this village by
Maharaja Marthanda Varma, who was the ruler of the state of Travancore.

carpet floating on the waters which made the King utter suddenly in surprise "Poovar - the
stream of flowers".
The historical records of the British say that the original name of Poovar was 'Pokummoosapuram'
which was derived from the name of a Muslim merchant Pokku Moosa Maraikar.

Malik Deenar who visited Kerala in the 17th century.
