Ambalavayal Heritage Museum

Ambalavayal Heritage Museum which is often referred to as the Wayanad Heritage Museum is one of the largest archaeological museums in Kerala. The exhibits of this museum that date back to 2nd century AD are the evidence of the advanced civilization that has been existed in the mountains of Wayanad and it helps to understand the rich culture, tradition and the history of Wayanad in the past. This heritage museum is situated 12 Km from Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad district. The main speciality of this museum is that here the exhibits are kept and preserved in four different blocks namely, Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi, and Jeevanasmruthi.

Different types of pictorial rock edicts known as Veerakallu (Hero Stones) are displayed in the Veerasmruthi block. The articles associated with tribal life are showcased in the Gothrasmruthi and Devasmruthi block. Terracotta figurines, a variety of hunting traps, ornaments, artworks excavated from the Malabar region and the Stone idols dating back to the 12th century are displayed in the Jeevanasmruthi block. Another speciality is that models of burial chambers of the tribes of Wayanad are displayed at this museum.

Why Special?

The exhibits are kept and preserved in four blocks: Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi, and Jeevanasmruthi. The Veerasmruthi block is the first block which displays different types of pictorial rock edicts known as Veerakkallu (Hero Stones). The Gothrasmruthi and Jeevanasmruthi sections showcase the articles associated with tribal life.

They also display tribal artefacts such as cowbells, headgear, farming implements, fish collecting bags and musical instruments. The last section of this Museum is the Jeevanasmruthi block and it displays terracotta figurines, a variety of hunting traps, ornaments, artworks excavated from the Malabar region and the Stone idols dating back to 12th century.

The multi-media theatre near this Heritage Museum offers show for tourists. Another interesting thing about this Museum is that it displays models of burial chambers of the tribes of Wayanad. The burial chambers consist of four stones placed on the edges and another stone known as the cap stone act as the roof.
