Monuments - Kanakakunnu Palace - Kerala

Kanakakunnu Palace situated in the heart of the Thiruvananthapuram city is believed to be the last architectural vestiges of the colonial era. Kanakakunnu Palace was initially the guest house of the Travancore kings which was constructed during the reign of the famous King of Travancore, His Highness Sree Moolam Thirunal Maharaja and also served as the main venue for royal banquets. It is situated on the top of a small hill and is embellished with beautiful green meadows.

The Palace has a well-maintained ground that hosts numerous cultural events every year. The Palace complex houses two famous auditoriums named as the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium and the Sooryakanthi auditorium. An All India Dance Festival, known as Nishagandhi festival takes place every year during the months of October to March at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium which is organized by the Department of Tourism.

Why Special?

Kanakakunnu Palace is believed to be the last architectural vestiges of the colonial era. It is built in typical Kerala style architecture. The red colored façade of the Palace is highly fascinating. This Palace served as the main venue for royal banquets.

The wonderful pieces of antique, exquisite pieces of royal furniture, and the massive crystal chandeliers are some of the attractions of this Palace. The Nishagandhi open-air auditorium and Sooryakanthi auditorium are the two auditoriums of this Palace complex.

The Department of Tourism organizes an all India Dance Festival, known as Nishagandhi festival every year during the months of October to March at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium.
