Palakkad Fort - Monuments in Kerala

The Palakkad Fort, popularly known as the Tipu Sultan Fort, is a beautiful historical monument situated in the heart of the Palakkad town. It was an ancient important military base. This Fort was built by Hyder Ali in the 18th century. Hence the Fort is named after Hyder Ali's son, Tipu Sultan.

It spreads over an area of 15 acres of a ground, known as Kota Maidan. The Fort was under the control of the Mysore rulers. Later the British took control of this Fort. It is one of the best-preserved forts in South India which is now under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Why Special?

The Fort is square shaped which is supported by walls and bastions which are square shaped as well. Earlier, the entrance of the fort was through a drawbridge, but now it is replaced by a permanent one. The major attraction of this Fort is the Kota Ambalam which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The open-air auditorium which is known as Rappadi, Martyr's column, and the beautiful garden namely Vatika Shilavatika are the other attractions of this Fort. The special sub-jail of Palakkad is located within the Fort.
