Flora and Fauna

The tropical evergreen and deciduous forests, as well as beautiful grasslands, make the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary prosperous. Most of the plants found here are of rich medicinal value. Meadows of rolling grass, white pine, kuntherekkapine, Pali, Vayana, Cheeni, Bhadraksham, and rosewood are the main floral species found in Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for providing shelter for a large number of wild elephants. Variety of mammals, reptiles and avifauna species are found here. Apart from elephants, you can spot tiger, sambar deer, guar, bison, wild dogs, jungle cats, giant squirrels, wild boar, etc. Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary houses various poisonous as well as non-poisonous snakes like cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones in the Sanctuary. Black Bulbul, Woodpecker, Golden Oriole, Jungle Fowl, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Peafowl, Jungle Babbler, Small Green Barbet, Large Wood Shrike, and Purple Sunbird are the rare bird species found here that can fascinate birdwatchers.
