Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is an abode of abundant flora and fauna. It is reckoned as the largest wildlife sanctuary of Kerala which sprawls across an area of 345 sq. km. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is probably a rain forest which is placed amidst the majestic hills of Western Ghats.d

It forms an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve because of its natural beauty and lavish biodiversity. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a large population of pachyderms and hence you can see elephants roaming around freely in this sanctuary. Many wildlife animals like tigers and deer are also spotted here along with exotic birds and butterflies. This sanctuary not only attracts wildlife enthusiasts but photo fanatics as well.

Flora and Fauna

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a mix of dry deciduous, moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest. Bamboos, Rosewood, Maruthi, Karimaruthi, Venteak, Vengal, Chadachi, Mazhukanjiram, etc constitute the moist deciduous forest. Veteria Indica., Lagerstroemia, Lanceolata, Terminalia Paniculata, etc form the semi-evergreen forest.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary provides habitat for elephants, panthers, tigers, jungle cats, civet cats, monitor lizards, monkeys, wild dogs, bison, deer, bears, and a variety of snakes are seen. It is also home to a variety of bird species like Peacocks, cuckoos, woodpeckers, babblers, owls, jungle fowls and many more. Varieties of butterflies can also be spotted in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary.
