Overview

Divya Desam temples are sacred places dedicated to Lord Vishnu, where the 12 Azhwars composed the 4000 Divya Prabandhams. Among the 84 Divya Desams across Tamil Nadu, 40 are located in the historically rich region of Chola Nadu. This journey explores these spiritual landmarks that hold centuries of history, culture, and devotion.


Detailed Itineary

Day 1: Arrival Trichy

On arrival at Trichy / railway station, after meet & greet formalities, get transferred to your hotel and check in. Later visit Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple which is the first temple among all the 108 Divya Desams. The main deity is Sri Ranganathaswamy. The temple is located on the banks of river Cauvery. This temple’s main deity was worshiped by Lord Sri Rama in Thrada Yuga. Lord Rama gifted the idol of Lord Ranganathar to Vibishana, the brother of King Ravana. While returning back to Sri Lanka after Rama’s coronation in Ayodhya, Vibishana placed the idol on the ground for a break during the journey. But Vibishana could not even move when he tried then. By this, Lord Renganathar expressed his desire to stay on the banks of river Cauvery and promised Vibishana that he would be in his reclining form facing Lanka in the south. Then visit Uraiyur Nachiyar kovil located near Trichy town station where the main deity name is Azhagiya Manavala Perumal. Overnight Hotel in Trichy.

Day 2: Trichy - Thanjavur (70 Km / 2 hrs)

After breakfast visit Purushothama perumal temple, also named as ‘Uthamar Kovil’, situated in Manachanallur Taluk, Tiruchirappalli district of Tamilnadu. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and also one of the 108 Divya Desam Temples. This temple is known as a sign of ‘Mumoorthigal' (Three Gods) Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma. It is also called as Bhikshandar Kovil. Then visit Thiruvellarai Pundarikaskshan temple which is believed to have been built by the Pallavas, which is shown by the three inscriptions in its two rock-cut caves and then visit Vadivazhagiya Nambi temple in Anbil, located at a distance of 35 kms away from Trichy. This temple dedicated to lord Vishnu and the main deity also known as Soundararaja perumal. After lunch visit Sri Appakudathan Perumal temple in Thiruperai, situated in Koviladi village in Trichy district which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Sri Appakkudathaan Perumal Temple said to be mostly contributed by Chola dynasties. Then visit Sri Hara Saaba Vimochana Perumal temple in Thirukandiyur, located in the outskirts of Thanjavur, followed by Neelamega Perumal temple dedicated to lord Vishnu. The important festivals are celebrated during the Tamil month of Chitirai & Panguni (Mar- Apr). Later transfer to Thanjavur and check in at the hotel. Overnight Hotel in Thanjavur.

Day 3: Thanjavur - Kumbakonam (50 Kms / 1.5 hrs)

After breakfast drive to Aduthurai Perumal temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the main deity name is also known as Jagad Rakshaga perumal, then to Kabisthalam Gajendra Veradhar Perumal temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams dedicated to Vishnu. He is worshipped as Gajendra Varadha Perumal with his consort Lakshmi as Ramamanivalli. Next to Bhoothangudi Vavil Ramar temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Bhomi Pirattiyar represents one of the five Panchabhootas Earth, gives dharshan along with Sri Ramar as Narayanan in Nindra Thirukkolam here. Hence the name “Pullam Boothan Kudi” for this temple. Then visit Athanoor Aandu Alakum Ayan Perumal temple which is also known as Bhargava Kshetram. The lord who is supposed to be the Paramaathma, resides (Urayum) in all our hearts, considered as the place of stay for him. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams. PM: Later drive to Kumbakonam and check in to hotel. Evening visit Kola Valvili Ramar temple, dedicated to Lord Sri Rama, who is worshipped as Kola Valvill Ramar with his consort Lakshmi as Maragathavalli. The temple is located 19 km away from Kumbakonam and is counted as Vaishnava Sukra Kshetra as Lord Vishnu here is a beautiful deity. This is the only temple where Garuda Bhagwan appears with 4 hands holding discus and conch. Finally visit Saarngapani temple, located in the center of Kumbakonam. It is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams of Lord Ranaganatha, Vaikuntha Ekathasi is the main festival in this temple. Overnight Hotel in Kumbakonam.

Day 4: Kumbakonam - Nagappatinam - Kumbakonam (150 Kms / 4 hrs)

After breakfast drive to Sowriraja Perumal temple, located at Thirukannapuram, a village in the outskirts of Nagapattinam. The main deity is lord Vishnu, who is worshiped as Sri Neelanega Perumal. The temple is believed to have been built by the Cholas. Then visit Soundariyarajan Neelamega Perumal. The main deity lord Vishnu is worshiped as Sri Soundararaja Perumal. The temple had contributions from Pallavas, Nayakas, and Cholas during the 8th to 10th centuries. PM: Later visit Thirukannankudi Loganatha Perumal temple, located 12 Kms away from Nagapattinam. The main deity is lord Vishnu, worshiped as Loganatha Perumal. As per Hindu legend, sage Gautama is believed to have worshiped the deity here. The temple was built by the Cholas and later contributions came from the Vijayanagara Dynasty & Madurai Nayakas. Then visit Thirukannanmangai Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple, 10 kms away from Thiruvarur city center. The main deity is lord Vishnu, worshiped as Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal. The temple was constructed by the Cholas and later by Thanjavur kings and Nayakas. Then visit Thirucherai Saranathan Perumal temple located in a small village, 15 kms away from Kumbakonam. The main deity lord Vishnu is worshiped as Sri Saranatha Perumal in a standing posture. This temple is believed to have been built in the 8th century by the Cholas. Lastly, visit Thirunarayur Nambi Perumal temple in Nachiyarkovil. Overnight Hotel in Kumbakonam.

Day 5: Kumbakonam - Chidhambaram (85 Kms / 3 hrs)

After breakfast visit Nathan Kovil Jaganatha Perumal temple, located in Kumbakonam district. The main deity is lord Vishnu, who is worshiped as Sri Jagannatha Perumal Oppiliappan temple. The Lord’s main name is Oppiliyappan. The temple is believed to be built during the 8th century. This temple prasadam is made without salt. Then visit Thiruvazhundur Devaadi Raja Perumal temple in Mayavaram district. The main deity is Devaadi Raja Perumal or Amaruvippan Perumal. PM: Later visit Sirupuliyur Arulmaakadal Perumal temple at a distance of 17 kms away from Mayiladuturai city. The main deity is Arulmaakadal Perumal or Sthalasayan Perumal. Then visit Parimala Ranganathar temple in Mayiladuturai town, dedicated to lord Vishnu. The deity name is Parimala Ranganathar, and the Perumal here is believed to have appeared before Chandra, the Moon god. The temple was constructed in different times during Cholas, Vijayanagara’s & Madurai Nayakas period. Next visit Thalachangadu Naan Mathiya Perumal temple located in Thalachengadu, a village of Mayavaram district. This temple is small but resembles the Chandraloga, the land of the Moon god. Thaayar has no separate sannadhi. Later drive to Chidambaram, en route visit Thadalar Seerkazhi Trivikrama Perumal temple in Sirkazhi town near Chidambaram. This temple is also called Thadalan Kovil. The main deity is Trivikrama Perumal in a standing posture. Upon arrival in Chidambaram, check in to the hotel. Overnight Hotel in Chidambaram.

Day 6: Chidambaram - Thiruvankadu - Chidambaram (80 Kms / 3 hrs)

After early breakfast, drive to Thiruvenkadu and visit Thiruvaali Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, Deiva Nayaga Perumal temple, Annan Kovil Srinivasa Perumal temple, Vaikuntha Natha Perumal temple, Sri Purushothama Perumal temple, Sri Per Arulaalan Perumal temple, Sri Senganmaal Ranganatha Perumal temple, Sri Kuda Maadu Koothan Perumal temple, and Manimaada Sri Narayana Perumal temple. PM: Later visit Thirumanikoodam Sri Varadaraja Perumal, Kavalambadi Sri Gopala Krishna Perumal temple, and Parthanpalli Thamaraiyal Kelvan Perumal temple. Evening drive back to Chidambaram. Overnight Hotel in Chidambaram.

Day 7: Chidambaram - Cuddalore - Thirukovilur - Trichy (300 Kms / 6 hrs)

Early morning visit Govindaraja Perumal temple (inside Natarajar temple, located in city center in Chidambaram). This is one of the Divya Desams placed inside Thillai Natarajar temple. The temple is also called Thiruchitrkootam in Vaishnavism. Later return to hotel. After breakfast, check out and drive to Cuddalore to visit Devanatha Perumal temple. The temple is the only historical temple in South India to have a shrine of Hayagriva on the hilltop. The Trivikrama temple is located in Thirukovilur, and the main deity is Ulagalantha Perumal or Trivikrama Perumal. Ulagalantha Perumal is believed to have appeared before King Mahabali and the Alvars. Later drive to Trichy. Upon arrival, transfer to Trichy airport/railway station for onward journey.
